Born to Swim
Broadcast 05/14/04
Elle Westercamp of Des Moines was born to swim. Her affinity for the water was apparent from her first visit to a pool at the age of three. Living in Iowa first caught up with Elle two years ago when she was winning statewide and national competitions, setting record times in even national swim meets. Elle's hard work in the pool has earned her more than just gold medals, it has also proven therapeutic. Diagnosed at the age of five with asthma, training for swimming competitions has strengthened her lungs and improved her health. Today, at the age of eleven, Elle's achievements include setting new records at the National Junior Olympics in 2005 and at the Iowa Games in 2006. She hopes her hard work will someday earn her the opportunity to swim at the Olympics.
