The Shows (Feature 1414.805)
Lightbulb Man of Dubuque

Living in Iowa features a look at the work of independent filmmaker Thomas Vandermillen, of Glendale, California. Vandermillen came to Iowa to do a film about a Dubuque man with an unusual collection.

The film takes viewers into the world of Ray "Harpo" Hutchinson of Dubuque. Legally blind, Harpo overcomes the physical shortcomings that life has dealt him and consumes himself in a world of flourescent and incandescent realities.

Harpo offers a tour of his treasures, stored in the basement of a boarding house. He unearths his enlightening collection with knowledge and joy.

The film also includes excerpts of songs by Iowa musician Greg Brown, of Iowa City.
