Cherokee's Nathan Schubert was among the 31 military personnel killed on January 26 when their helicopter crashed in western Iraq. Schubert, who would have turned 23 the next day, was scheduled to leave Iraq February 4. Schubert and his fellow marines were being deployed in support of the upcoming Iraqi election. The crash was the single deadliest event for the American military in Iraq since the United States invaded in March 2003. Living in Iowa attended Schubert's February 5 funeral in Cherokee, and his interment in a rural cemetery near Galva, Iowa.
