Iowa Health Workers Respond

Five days after the Category 4 storm hit Louisiana, a team of medical professionals left Iowa to provide relief to hurricane victims. For the 30-person crew, known as a Disaster Medical Assistance Team or D-mat, the first order of business was setting up a makeshift hospital at an abandoned K-Mart in Baton Rogue.

"And through the door walks what I call the A-team and that was the EMAT team from Iowa, said Monica Nijoka, an RN from Baton Rouge. They are my heroes. These guys and nurses and EMT's and doctors walk through this door and they looked at me and said, 'what can we do?' And they took over."
