Peter Hedges - Part Two
Broadcast 11/10/06 West Dest Moines native Peter Hedges burst on the national scene with his first novel, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and then adapted that story for the acclaimed 1993 movie starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. His second novel, "An Ocean in Iowa," drew heavily from his experience of growing up in central Iowa in the 60s and underlined Peter's gift for creating characters of great pathos. Today, his talent for screen adaptations is in demand, and in 2003, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay adaptation of "About a Boy" starring Hugh Grant. Most recently he made his directoral debut with the film, "Pieces of April." He is currently working on a variety of writing and directing projects. Living in Iowa interviewed Peter Hedges during his April, 2005, visit to Iowa, as part of the Des Moines Public Library's "Authors Visiting in Des Moines" Authors series. This interview has been edited into a two-part series for Living in Iowa.
