This program error has been identified and fixed. - QuickTime video performance problems on Macintosh OS 9 and above have been resolved. - Other minor fixes and enhancements have been included. Installation Procedure The Earth Trails: Mississippi application and supporting files must be installed on your computer's hard drive. Double-click the Install Mississippi River icon on the CD-ROM and follow the installer's instructions. -On the Macintosh, the program will be installed in the Mississippi River folder on the hard drive. An alias to the program will be installed on the computer's desktop. Technical Requirements - Macintosh (120 MHz PowerPC, G3) running MacOS 8.5 or greater or Windows 95/98 (200 MHz Pentium or comparable)* - Sound enabled (headphones or external speakers recommended) - 32 MB of RAM memory - 8x CD-ROM drive - Hard disk with at least 40 MB available for installation - QuickTime™ 4.0 (included on CD-ROM) or higher - Internet connection and Web browser installed for Web access (optional) - For best performance and legibility, it is recommended that the monitor resolution be set to 800x600 pixels while running Earth Trails: Mississippi River. - This program will automatically set your monitor resolution to thousands of colors (16-bit) or millions of colors (32-bit) depending on your computer's capability. * This program was developed to take advantage of many advanced multimedia capabilities of modern desktop computers. Performance improves with faster processors and CD-ROM speeds. Installation Procedure The Earth Trails: Mississippi application and supporting files must be installed on your computer's hard drive. Double-click the Install Mississippi River icon on the CD-ROM and follow the installer's instructions. -On the Macintosh, the program will be installed in the Mississippi River folder on the hard drive. An alias to the program will be installed on the computer's desktop. -On Windows, the program will be installed in the Earth Trails folder within the Program Files folder on the hard drive. A shortcut to the program will be installed on the computer's desktop. If you do not see the icon on your desktop, you can always access the main application by going to the correct folder on the hard drive (or choose Programs / Earth Trails / Mississippi River from the Start menu on Windows). QuickTime™ 4.0 This program requires QuickTime version 4.0 or higher. If not present on your computer, this will be installed as part of the Earth Trails: Mississippi River installation. If this installation fails, install QuickTime yourself by running the installer located on the Earth Trails: Mississippi River CD-ROM in the QuickTime Installer folder. Double-click the Install QuickTime icon within the folder and follow the installer instructions. Adobe Acrobat™ Reader The CD-ROM contains Adobe Acrobat PDF files for viewing and printing lesson plans and additional copies of the materials printed in this package. PDF is a type of document that maintains the formatting we've designed regardless of the programs your computer has. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and print these documents. We have included the Adobe Acrobat Reader installer on the CD-ROM for your convenience. Known Incompatibilities If you are experiencing the following problems on Windows machines: -The program does not play sounds correctly -The program does not play any sound -The program crashes First, make sure that QuickTime is installed. The installer can be found on the Earth Trails: Mississippi River CD-ROM. If these problems persist, this may be due to a problem with your Sound control panel. To solve this problem: 1. Close the Earth Trails: Mississippi River application if it is still running. 2. Open the "Control Panel" folder (start\settings\control panel). 3. Double click on the QuickTime control panel. 4. Select "Sound Out" from the popup menu 5. Select 'waveOut' from the "Choose a device for playback" popup menu 6. Close the "QuickTime Settings" window 7. Restart the Earth Trails: Mississippi River application.
