Outhouse Preservation for Rural History

posted on October 13, 2006

Preserving the historic rural landscape includes everything from maintaining red barns to, well – outhouses. The 200-member American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville, Illinois is holding its first annual Outhouse Festival and Auction.

Some say outhouses go back thousands of years. As recently as the 1950s, there were about 50 million outhouses.

Greenville mayor, Alan Gaffner, says he wouldn't mind if his town became known as the outhouse capital of Illinois if it generates tourism dollars and puts his town – 50 miles east of St. Louis – on the map.
