President Bush called for an end to all types of destructive sea fishing and directing the secretaries of the State and Commerce departments to promote "sustainable" fishing practices.
Bush said he wants to work toward eliminating the practices of bottom trawling that devastates fish populations and the ocean floor. He also opposes any fishing practices "that destroy the long-term natural productivity of fish stocks or habitats."
This week, some U.S. senators and many environmental groups hope to persuade the United Nations to ban bottom trawling anywhere that it's unregulated.
