Drivers Beware of Deer

posted on September 29, 2006

What has four legs and caused $1 billion in vehicle damage nationwide last year? The answer shouldn't surprise any American that's noticed an influx in the deer population throughout the country. Deer, which cause more than 1.5 million vehicle collisions annually, are more active in cooler months. As winter approaches, more deer are expected to appear on main streets, back roads, and crowded highways. "As our wildlife habitat continues to shrink, accidents with deer and other animals are likely to increase," said Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president at the Insurance Information Institute. Deer have caused an average 150 vehicular-related deaths each year, the majority of which occur during the deer season months of October to December.
