John Hornung of the U.S. Agricultural Statistics Service in Madison said Wisconsin's anticipated 62 million pound harvest surpasses last season's crop by 10 million pounds. In 2004, growers produced 57 million pounds.
"I wouldn't necessarily call it a bumper crop," Hornung said. "Over the past 10 years, the average apple harvest in the state is 61.7 million pounds."
Last year, Wisconsin ranked 12th in total apple production among the 35 states with commercial growers. About 900 orchards produce apples on nearly 5,800 Wisconsin acres.
