Montana Bucks National Trend, Increases Wheat Acreage

posted on April 14, 2006

Wheat planting in Montana is expected to boost acreage this spring. Montana farmers plan to plant 5.5 million acres of wheat for the crop year, the most since 2002.

The increase represents a bright spot in the state's wheat picture as winter wheat plantings are down from the previous year. But while spring wheat acreage is higher, it is still much lower than the acreage seeded during the middle and late 1990's.

Nationwide, total wheat acreage is expected to dip to its lowest level since 1972.
