Trade Talks Delayed Between U.S. and UAE

posted on March 10, 2006

The day after a Dubai company backed out of its deal to take over six major American ports, the U.S. Trade Representative's office announced a postponement of free trade talks between the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates. The talks were to begin Monday, but both sides needed more time to prepare, according to the announcement.

The spokesperson for the USTR refused to say whether the postponement of trade talks was related to the controversy over port security. Amid a storm of protest in the Congress, the Dubai company, DP World, said it would transfer operation of the six ports to a U.S. entity.
