Water Quality Dispute Between Two Southern States

posted on February 24, 2006

The Supreme Court this week turned down Arkansas' request to sue Oklahoma over a river quality issue. Last year, Oklahoma sued Tyson Foods and seven other Arkansas poultry companies, asking that they pay to repair an Illinois River watershed that runs through both states. Oklahoma said farm runoff from the poultry companies east of the Sooner's state line polluted the river.

Arkansas wanted to counter-sue its neighbor saying Oklahoma was improperly trying to impose water standards across state lines.
