posted on February 3, 2006

After 90 years of growing pineapple in Hawaii, Fresh Del Monte Produce announced this week it will stop operations there in a little more than two years.

Del Monte claims its cheaper to produce the crop in other parts of the world. Worldwide, the top pineapple producers are Thailand, the Philippines, Brazil, China, India and Costa Rica.

In Hawaii, USDA says pineapple has been the top agricultural commodity, producing 212,000 tons of the fruit worth, estimated $79 million.

According to local union officials, about 700 pineapple workers in Hawaii will lose their jobs.
