Fate Of Feta Favors Greeks

posted on October 28, 2005

A decision concerning the fate of feta cheese was reached by the European Union's highest court this week. The Luxembourg-based court favored Greece and the final ruling allows exclusive marketing rights for Greek producers of feta cheese.

Germany and Denmark, with support from Britain and France, challenged the designation of origin for the traditional Greek product. German and Danish producers argue that what makes feta specific is the technique of making it, not a geographical location.

"The ruling is grotesque and political," said Hans Bender of the Danish Dairy Board. "What will be next? Will the Italians demand that pizza become a protected product that no one can make?"
