Supreme Court Refuses Tobacco Lawsuit

posted on October 21, 2005

The U.S. Supreme Court this week refused the Bush administration's attempt to pursue a $280 billion lawsuit against tobacco companies on claims the firms misled the public about the dangers of smoking.

The decision, a major victory for cigarette makers, was not unexpected because the lawsuit, filed under the Clinton administration still was pending.

The fight at the high court was over the amount of money the companies would have to pay, if a lower court judge had ruled they violated federal anti-racketeering laws.
