U.S. Puts Ball in Japanese Court on Beef Ban

posted on April 29, 2005

There has been no movement, as yet, on the Japanese import ban on U.S. beef. U.S.D.A. Under Secretary Chuck Lambert announced this week that the technical conditions for a resumption of beef imports to Japan have been met. Even so, Japanese officials are planning yet another trip to the United States to visit U.S. packing plants.

The situation has left U.S. officials frustrated as they wait for the bureaucracy in Tokyo to move forward. As month 16 tick by, congressional members are starting to murmur, again, about possible sanctions if the ban is not lifted in a timely manner.
