Senate Confirms New U.S. Trade Representative

posted on April 29, 2005

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved Rep. Rob Portman, R-Ohio as the new U.S. Trade Representative.

Portman, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate where he enjoys broad support.

But Senator Evan Bayh, D-Indiana, has said he will delay Senate action until an unrelated trade issue is resolved with China.

Portman is a close ally of President Bush.
