Nebraska's Largest Swine Producer Files for Bankruptcy

posted on May 7, 2004

Furnas County Farms, Nebraska's largest swine producer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week.

The Columbus-based company has 50,000 breeding sows and annual production that accounts for 15 percent of all the hogs raised in the state of Nebraska annually. It's also the 14th largest hog operation in the U.S.

Its lenders are carrying an estimated $172 million in unsecured debt, according to records on file at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Omaha. More than $19 million of that is held by the First National Bank of Omaha.
