Livestock Group Seeks to Block Imports

posted on April 23, 2004

RCALF-USA, a livestock producer association, has filed suit in federal court seeking a restraining order on the importation of bone-in beef from Canada.

The government had agreed to allow the imports after a technical panel made up of representatives from the two countries met to discuss harmonization of meat trade rules.

If allowed, the agreement would permit imports of ground meat from Canada, although USDA officials say ground meat from animals less than 24 months of age already is entering the U.S.
