From the FDA to you ... Nuts!

The Food and Drug Administration has ruled that certain kinds of nuts now can carry health claims.

Under a controversial new plan, food makers will be allowed to advertise the health benefits of some nuts before they're proven. So far, the "qualified health claims" have been OK'd for almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts and peanuts.

The FDA says packages of those nuts now may bear the line: "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.
