In the buffer zone.
1.4 (M) million miles of buffer strips have been installed to protect the nation's surface water from pollution.
That's 69% of the USDA's goal to establish two (M) million miles of strips along land to prevent pollution, including pesticide run-off.
Almost half of the buffer strips are enrolled in the continuous-sign-up Conservation Reserve Program or the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program. Other acres are enrolled in a Wetlands Reserve Program or were built with the aid of the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
