Reducing Risk of Diabetes

posted on February 14, 2003

Reducing risk.

A study that followed 43-thousand men for twelve years found those who ate more than three servings per day of whole grain foods were 40% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than men who ate less than a half-serving per day.

One serving would include one slice of bread, a half-cup of rice or cooked cereal, or one ounce of dry cereal.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body fails to respond to insulin, the hormone that allows sugars from digested food to enter cells for energy.
