Partnerships in the private sector between fair trade coffee companies and aid organizations have existed for some time. Now, the public sector is following suit.
In an attempt to achieve like-minded goals, the U-S Agency for International Development has agreed to cooperate on projects with Vermont coffee roaster Green Mountain. The two entities will provide technical and development assistance to small- and medium-sized farmers in coffee growing nations.
In recent years, coffee prices have been severely depressed with street prices for beans at roughly one-quarter or less of production costs. In contrast, fair trade coffee sales have been on the increase with U-S sales doubling every year since 1999.
