Very Productive Pigs

Learning pig production from the Chinese.

To increase the number of offspring in pigs raised in the U.S., the Agriculture Department is studying a breed from China.

The Meishan females begin puberty in only 60 days compared to 150 days in other pigs. The females ovulate more eggs per cycle than American pigs… and they also have a greater uterine capacity, meaning they can deliver more live piglets.

Meishan males had five to seven times more follicle stimulating hormone in their blood than U.S. boars. The hormone aids in the production of sperm.
