Nettles Could Become New Fashion Fabric

posted on July 5, 2002

Would you wear stinging nettles?

Widely recognized as a weed with a sting when it comes in contact with human skin … the nettle may well become the next fiber crop and fashion fabric.

Researchers in Britain say, once the nettle's irritating leaves are stripped away the fiber from nettle stems is strong, long and perfect for fabric.

A recent European study shows a certain variety of nettle grows very tall and is resistant to weeds and pests, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to cotton.

An Italian fashion house is experimenting with nettle cloth and coloring it with natural dyes.
