Farmers in select areas will be able to apply for crop subsidies over the Internet for the first time in an experiment being conducted by the Agriculture Department.
One county was chosen from each of 21 states to participate in the pilot project. Loan deficiency payments will be the only subsidies available online.
USDA county offices are expected to be busy this year implementing provisions of the new farm bill that became law last week and government officials are optimistic the new system will speed up processing and reduce paperwork.
USDA is also utilizing the Web to provide information about the new farm bill. It can be found at: www.usda.gov/farmbill
