For Tuesday, it's Chef Surprise and Soy Milk.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has scheduled listening sessions on reform of the federal school lunch program, including whether to include soy milk with students' meals.
Current regulations require that milk be served with school lunches or the meals are NOT reimbursable. The rules also define milk as cow's milk, which makes meals served with soy milk ineligible for reimbursement, except in cases of medical need.
Advocates working for the inclusion of soy milk cite the health benefits of soy-based foods … and note that some school systems rely on the federal lunch program for more than half of their cafeteria funds.
