Adopt-a-Foal Efforts Under Way

Of horses and hormones.

A byproduct of the estrogen-harvesting business … baby horses … are being rescued from slaughter.

A Pennsylvania couple has started an equine adoption agency to rescue some 35,000 foals born as a result of a pharmaceutical need for humans.

Horses are artificially inseminated and estrogen from the urine of the pregnant mare is extracted for production of Premarin, a popular women's hormone replacement drug.
