An Onion A Day Keeps the Dr. Away

posted on December 21, 2001

An onion a day keeps the doctor away.

Onions, and other foods that contain a natural substance called quercetin (pron: KWUR si tin), can significantly reduce the ability of prostate tumor cells to develop and proliferate.

Other foods containing quercetin include apples, leafy vegetables, green and black tea, beans and red wine.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic say the study has been done only on cancer cells cultivated in the lab and not yet tested on humans.

They are searching for an alternative to the current treatment for prostate cancer, which have severe side effects.
