Glowing Soybeans

posted on December 14, 2001

Ah, there's nothing like the glow and flame of …soybeans?

At least twenty manufactures are using soy wax to make candles. One factor driving demand for soy-based candles is they burn cleaner than those made from paraffin wax ... which is a derivative of petroleum.

Candle makers also say soy candles burn 30% to 40% longer than paraffin candles.

While it is estimated soy-based candles account for just one percent of the candle market … manufacturers purchased at least 800,000 pounds of soy wax … which equates to the oil from about 10,000 bushels of beans.
