Choosing farm livin'…

A recent department of agriculture survey reveals most women in agriculture did not grow up on farms and ranches.

The nationwide sample of 7500 farms shows women are involved in farm operations 81 percent of the time, but slightly less than half of the respondents were raised with farm and ranch backgrounds.

The survey also included other findings: The median age of farm women is 53; one-fourth have some college with 15 percent having achieved at least a four-year degree; half of the women interviewed have an off farm job; and ten percent of the women surveyed said they were the principle farm operator.
