Fuma-mint

posted on September 7, 2001

Ahhh, the sweet smell of mint … used to kill bugs.

The USDA is testing many oils extracted from Asian spices, in a search for an environmentally friendly method of pest control in stored grains.

Japanese mint contained the most potent oils against rice weevils … which bore into the grains and consume the kernel.

The mint oil may be used as the basis for a new fumigant … in the search for replacing current pest control components that are losing federal registration due to environmental concerns.
