Rice on the rise...

Arkansas Extension researchers say they have developed a rice variety that will cause the state's rice yields to soar.

The Researchers say the long-grain white rice, grown in test plots, has average 202 bushels an acre. The statewide average yield in Arkansas is 130 bushels to the acre. The promise of 50 percent higher yields is expected to interest most of the state's farmers and the researchers say the new variety, which was developed through traditional open cross-breeding, may be available for farmers as early as next spring.
