Dying Bees

posted on July 20, 2001

A hush falls over hives ...

The nation's bees are dying in huge numbers. The combination of last summer's rains which washed away flower nectar and a pesticide resistant mite have combine to kill off bee colonies. Vermont beekeepers report a fifth of the state's hives have been lost. Some beekeepers report losses as high as 90 percent.

The losses have not only been devastating to the honey industry, but have affected other crops as well. Bees remain the most efficient pollinators of crops – especially the multi-billion dollar tree fruit.
