Food Film

It's a snack food … and now also incredible, edible … food packaging.

Sheets of pureed fruit have long been available as a snack food but now a similar edible "film" has been developed that can be applied to sliced produce and meats. The coating helps prevent moisture loss and control browning.

The USDA's Agricultural Research Service has developed a thin opaque "film" composed of up to 100% fruit or vegetable material. The protective layering can also provide new flavor combinations … such as strawberry "film" on sliced bananas … or apple glaze on pork.
