A fat-reducing vegetable oil is on its way to the U-S. Clinical studies in Japan have shown body fat content is lowered by the consumption of diacylglycerol (die-AY-sul-GLY-cer-all) oil, also known as DAG oil.
The oil is currently the best-selling premium vegetable oil in Japan. The Japanese company that produces it is partnering with Archer-Daniels-Midland to bring the canola and soy product to the U-S. A-D-M claims DAG oil is less likely to be stored as fat in the human body and does not cause the gastrointestinal problems which can occur with fat substitutes.
The new oil will be marketed for use as a cooking oil and as an ingredient in packaged foods such as frozen dinners and cookies.
