Worker bees get new job

posted on March 17, 2000

INSECTS MAKE A "BEE-LINE" TO HELP IN THE BERRY FIELDS.

RATHER THAN SPRAY A FUNGICIDE ON STRAWBERRY FIELDS TO PREVENT FRUIT ROT, SCIENTISTS SAY THE BEES CAN DO THE WORK.

AN OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCHER PLACED FUNGICIDE POWDER AT THE ENTRANCE OF BEEHIVES. THE BEES STEPPED IN THE POWDER AS THEY EXITED THE HIVES ... AND CARRIED IT TO THE STRAWBERRY FLOWERS.

RESEARCHERS SAY UNLIKE BROADCAST SPRAYING OF FIELDS, THE BEE FUNGICIDE DELIVERY HAS A LOWER IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, FEWER CHEMICALS FOR FARMERS TO HANDLE, AND IS LESS EXPENSIVE TO APPLY.
