posted on March 17, 2000

A NATURAL WEED EATER DISCOVERED.

A GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, EXAMINING PATCHES OF THE PESKY KUDZU VINE, ISOLATED SPOTS ON THE PLANT'S LEAVES. THE SPOTS WERE A FUNGUS CALLED, COLLETOTRICHUM GLOEOSPORIOIDES ...WHICH CAUSES LESIONS ON THE KUDZU LEAVES AND STEMS.

IN HIS PRESENTATION TO THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE, THE TEEN SAID THE FUNGUS ATTACKS PLANTS ALREADY UNDER STRESS ... SO HE HAS WORKED OUT A SYSTEM TO FIRST APPLY A HERBICIDE MIXTURE TO THE KUDZU ... FOLLOWED BY AN APPLICATION OF FUNGUS SPORES.
