Economic Outlook: January 4, 2019

The burdens of the U.S.- Chinese trade war are being shouldered by sectors of the economy other than agriculture. --

The ISM Manufacturing Index moved lower in December as the battle put a dent in U.S. manufacturing.

The new data added pressure to the Dow that was already in a tailspin over tech stocks. News of 312,000 jobs being created last month stopped the slide.

The prospect of getting a job put more people on the hunt for work pushing the unemployment rate up 0.2 of a point to 3.9 percent.

The market rebound also was fueled by Fed Chair Jerome Powell -- who said he will watch economic indicators closely before touching interest rates.
