Live Call-In on Iowa Public Television

With busy lives of careers and raising children, those of us in our 40s and 50s never think about or prepare ourselves for, taking care of our aging parents. When and if that time comes, it generally comes too soon and most of us are unprepared.

But Iowa Public Television helped viewers sort through the tough questions on providing care with seven panelists offering advice on legal, financial, insurance and housing issues. Two guests were also caregivers to seniors, who relayed how they handled various situations.

"I made a commitment to come and help my mother," said Frank Owens, who moved from the home he still owns in Altoona, to live with his mother in Des Moines. In a panel discussion, he told the television audience that it was difficult to find help and support in the beginning. He said he made several phone calls to various agencies until he found the support services he needed. From those calls, he found an adult day center his mother could attend while he was at work.
