Name of Strategy
Vocabulary: General Vocabulary
My seventh graders are now reading Call of the Wild. Jack Londons vocabulary is very rich. Each chapter has about a dozen words that are really foreign to the kids. After the first two chapters, I had the kids each choose a word and write a sentence using the word to show its meaning and then illustrate the sentence. I then have big flashcards to use to help them practice the meanings of the words before a quiz over them, and then I can put the papers up on the wall to continue to remind them. They love the activity and seem to more easily learn the meanings of the words.

Very Useful and Effective
This is the second time I have had the students incorporate illustrations in their vocabulary study. I am amazed at the difference it makes. I would highly recommend it to ANY class with unique vocabulary.
