Globe Trekker

New Orleans City Guide (#409)

Justine Shapiro tours the French Quarter and the Garden District, where she pays her respects at the Creole cemetery. She witnesses a voodoo wedding ceremony, flies over Jean Lafitte National Park and paddles through Bearer Terrier Park, a wildlife sanctuary. Driving along the Mississippi River toward Vacherie, Justine visits Oak Alley and Laura plantations. The latter has been run by female family members for 84 years. Back in the French Quarter, Justine celebrates Lundi Gras, the day before Mardi Gras, and pays a visit to one of the many floats. She then marks Mardi Gras in another part of town with festivities organized by black New Orleansians, who revel in a very different manner than the rest of the city does.
