PBS Video

Program Description: In August 1941, aboard the USS Augusta and HMS Prince of Wales, a secret meeting took place between two of the most powerful leaders in the world. ATLANTIC CHARTER: THE END OF COLONIALISM presents the first detailed television account of this historic meeting between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Desperate to enlist American support in the War, Churchill would reluctantly agree, at least in principle, to the dismantling of colonial empires. Word of the British-American agreement soon spread to Germany and Japan, with Hitler accelerating his plan for the "Final Solution" for the European Jews and the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.
