Ancient Civilizations

The Beginning Is in the End (#101)

This program examines how civilizations began in China, India, Egypt, and Central America, but concentrates mostly on Sumer, a region of Mesopotamia near the meeting of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The basic human needs for food, security, and creativity are shown to have shaped the pattern of growth of ancient societies.

Program Description: ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS takes a look at the remarkable civilizations of ancient China, India, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Meso-America from 3000 B.C. (the emergence of writing) to 450 A.D. (the fall of Rome). Particular attention is paid to the role of women in each society. Maps and animation present lateral time comparison, and the spinning globe denotes "stop-tape" teaching opportunities.
