American Experience

Macarthur: Part 2 (#1109)

In this episode, Macarthur marches across New Guinea to beat the Navy to the Philippines, fulfilling his vow to return and liberate his troops that had been abandoned to a Japanese POW camp. After successful campaigning for much of the war, MacArthur arranges the signing of a peace treaty with Japan with great ceremony and is charged with the reconstruction of Japan. Later replaced in Tokyo, MacArthur makes several unsuccessful political bids and is removed from the circle of power until the Korean War breaks out and he is needed once again.
