Speaker of the Iowa House Ron Corbett (#2618)

On Sunday, January 10, 1999, at noon and 7:00 p.m., IOWA PRESS welcomes Rep. Ron Corbett, Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives, to the Iowa Public Television studios.

Speaker Corbett (R-Cedar Rapids) will preview the 78th Iowa General
Assembly, which he will gavel open on Monday, January 11 at the Iowa

Host and moderator Dean Borg will be joined at the IOWA PRESS table by Iowa Statehouse reporters David Yepsen of the Des Moines Register and Mike Glover of the Associated Press.

Speaker Corbett will focus on the still-emerging legislative agenda for the
78th General Assembly. Both Governor-elect Tom Vilsack and legislative
leadership have indicated that education funding and control of the growing
statewide problem of methamphetamine production and usage will be top
Statehouse priorities for both the Executive and Legislative branches
during the upcoming legislative session.

Speaker Corbett will preside over an Iowa House of Representatives which
will have a Republican majority advantage of 56-44. In the Iowa Senate,
the Republicans have a majority advantage of 30-20.
