American Woodshop

Scroll Saw Holiday Gifts (#802)

Suzy Phillips returns to share her scroll-saw tips as she makes a striking holiday centerpiece. This stand for a small Christmas tree features a rotating platform on top of a music-box base. The base is an example of turned art -- wood pieces created on a turning metal plate -- and to prepare viewers for making it, Scott teaches a detailed turning workshop. Chicago scroll-saw master Roy King illustrates how intarsia, the art of decorating a surface with inlaid wooden patterns, can transform a basic gift box into a memorable keepsake, and we visit West Virginia to see how hand-blown glass is joined to wood to form graceful goblets.
