Classical Destinations

St Petersburg (#105)

The former capital of Russia was home to the composers Borodin, Glinka, Mussorgsky.

Education Record Rights: 1 year from each broadcast.

Program Description: A new concept in travel documentary and storytelling, this series explores how the physical beauty of Europe's most spectacular cities and landscapes directly inspired some of its greatest classical composers to write their masterworks. Each week, viewers learn about the lives of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Grieg, Tchaikovsky etc., the cities they lived in, and how their work reflects the very same surroundings we see today. For example, how the brilliant light of Venice infused the clarity and vivacity of Vivaldi's Four Seasons or how the snow steeped forests of Finland inspired Sibelius to create his serene and majestic chords. Renowned actor, writer and music specialist Simon Callow hosts and narrates over a soundtrack of classical music's greatest works performed by the world's most distinguished artists and orchestras.
