State Fair Parade Hear the bands, see the floats, and enjoy the fun of the State Fair Parade as IPTV kicks off it’s 38th year of highlights of the Iowa State Fair. Corn Dog Chomp This year’s Fair got off to an unusual start. Fairgoers who arrived between 5:00 and 8:30 a.m. on the first day got in free. Then, about 11,000 of them then turned up at the Grandstand for the Corn Dog Chomp, when the 11,000 all bit on a corn dog at once. Peter Hamlin shares the fun. Adult Fine Art Exhibition and Judging at the Cultural Center The Adult Fine Art Exhibition is one of the largest juried shows in the state. IPTV views some of the winning entries. Grocery Bagging Contest It seems appropriate that the Grocery Bagging contest was held at the new Budweiser Stage. Beer may not provide all the necessary nutrients, but you buy it in grocery stores and you carry it in grocery bags. Dairy Cattle Show The dairy industry is an important part of Iowa agriculture. The sale of milk, cull cows and calves contributes more than 500 million to the state’s economy. Good reason to stop by the Livestock Pavilion for the Dairy Cattle Show. Marvelous Hat Contest Red Hat Society groups were invited to Pioneer Hall to compete in the Marvelous Hat Contest. The categories were Fancy and Frivolous and Creative and Kooky. Silver Ring Making Workshop Corning, Iowa’s artist-in-residence Rachel Sims teaches people how to make a silver ring they can take home, IPTV’s Jeneane Beck stopped by the Cultural Center for a lesson. Side Roads with Paul Berge Paul Berge is back, horsing around on a Side Road at the State Fair. He’s found something that weight 12 tons, has 32 legs and roughly 144 hands. Give up? It s the Budweiser Clydesdale Hitch. Cowgirl Queen The glamour of a beauty pageant and intensity of the horse show ring culminate in the annual State Fair Cowgirl Queen contest. Judged on both riding skills and personal appearance, more than 120 Iowans compete for the honor of reigning as Cowgirl Queen. Highlights from the show ring include the Cowgirl Queen salute, a hallmark of the competition, and the crowning of this year’s junior and senior Cowgirl Queens. Tall Corn Contest The corn harvest not only came early in some places, but some of the crop by-passed the local elevator and was delivered straight to the Iowa State Fair. Enjoy the tall corn contest at Pioneer Hall. Fair Prep – 4-H Sheep Competing at the Fair is a family tradition for some. The Welters of Gowrie, Iowa have been exhibiting 4-H projects at their county and the State Fair for nearly 50 years. Big Animals Join IPTV at the weigh-ins for the biggest bull, boar and ram at the 2008 Iowa State Fair.
